Swimming is en excellent form of exercise due to the fact that the body is supported in the water because it is approximately the same density as water.  As the body is supported by the water so that less stress is placed on joints and bones.  This means that it is excellent as a way of recovering from injuries or for helping those with disabilities.

Very little action is normally needed to stay afloat, and swimming involves using the body's limbs in a way that is totally different to any other form of exercise.  It also helps your heart and lungs and regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness.

Swimming is a way of relaxing and focussing only on what you are doing so is also a form of meditation, which can improve your feeling of well-being leaving you relaxed and refreshed.
