Yes, one possibility is what hollywood showed us in the movies Armageddon and Deep impact. Of course in real life it would not be as dramatic.
Consider this: A NASA program spots an asteroid that is predicted to hit the Earth in 200 years. It is big enough to really mess us up. But with enough time a number of things could be done to ever so slightly change the path of the killer asteroid. Given this much time a tiny push would be enough to have it not hit the Earth. No nuclear explosions, nobody dies, perhaps just a remote control robot to set up a solar sail or a solar ion propulsion system that would work for years.
