The causes of Othello's tragedy include the lies of his supposed friend Iago, who uses Othello's insecurities about his age, racial and cultural differences from his wife, and lack of experience with women in general, to persuade him that she is unfaithful. Othello's own over-trusting character and - when pushed - jealous temper are also causes; even Desdemona's innocence makes her easy prey for Iago.
