That is a very interesting question!  I don't know how you could make a definitive case for how the media effects social change.  How would you prove the point?  My opinion is that the media has a huge effect on our thinking, our social interactions, our politics, our religions, how we raise our children, etc.  Many people do not really think things through.  They are easily swayed by things they see on TV or read in the magazines or papers.
