Before you start a picture book it is a good idea to take a look in your local library to see what's already around. The picture book market is a particularly tough one. There is much competition around, so you need to produce something that is original with characters that will be appealing and realistic to children and also their parents.

Many agents and publishers state that illustrations need to have bright colours, as they believe this will appeal more to children.

Books can also help you to get a good idea of where to start when illustrating a children's book. 'Illustrating Children's Books' by Martin Salisbury is a very good guide book on how to create a good children's book and also how to approach publishers. It has examples of other artists' work and what they techniques they use. The book also includes a glossary which will help you understand unfamiliar terms.
