How Did Females Help The Chartist Movement?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The most numerous amongst the Chartists' rank and file were working men and women whose contact was on the fringe of public meetings. They went to them out of curiosity.

There were few female leaders and the police avoided arresting to prevent publicity. Females may have numbered a quarter of the Chartists' support. As well as the creation of the City of London Female Chartists Association, women also contributed to local branches of the movement as well. Indeed, there were a number of benefits to the involvement of women in the movement.

They raised funds for the defence of Chartists accused of crimes and for the support of families of those transported from Britain. Women organised social and fundraising activities and were involved in the teetotal and temperance societies. They also ran Sunday schools and bibles classes as well as organising family budgets and encouraging shopkeepers to support the cause.
