Have you had this problem long? A few weeks is unpleasant, but you may well get back to normal after a while. However, if you've had trouble sleeping for longer, you may need to look at the causes.
First the basics: Do you drink coffee, alcohol in the evening? Are you getting exercise every day; a short walk or some stretching (though not too close to bedtime) can be very helpful. Foods like red meat and cheese aren't recommended in the evening, while others, such as lettuce, are supposed to have a calming effect.
More generally, you might have to think if there are stresses in your life that are making you tense, and see if you can address those.
One tip that sometimes works for me: Start telling yourself a story you know well (not aloud of course) like the plot of a film or novel. Somehow that seems to relax the brain.
You may need medical help - there is a website at

Go to your doctor ask him/her to do a sleep apnea test on you? there are sleep disorder units in most major hospitals and sometimes the answers can be found just by going and finding out if there is a medical facility at your local hospital that treats these disorders.
