My Cat Might Have Periodontal Disease, What Should I Do?

I've heard that you need to brush your cat's teeth so it doesn't get periodontal disease but my cat is 5 yeas old and she never had her teeth brushed until now. I checked her teeth and I saw her teeth gums were red surrounding the teeth and she has bad breath. I can't take her to a vet but don't ask me why, so is it safe for me to brush her teeth and if I start to brush her teeth will the disease go away? I use four paws pet dental with fluoride toothpaste, please help me!

Sorry KoolKat, once a cat has peridontitis, it won't go away without having her teeth cleaned by a vet.  My late male cat, had a serious case of peridontal disease.  Cats have even worse problems than people have, because their teeth can actually dissolve in their mouths, which is a very painful process.  I brushed his teeth, but he hated it, and in the end it didn't prevent peridontitis, anyway.  A vet's the only one who can solve her problem.  Having bad teeth, can affect their hearts, and other major organs.  So please, if there's anyway, have her teeth cleaned.  Look on the internet to see if there are any foundations, or other philanthropic  sites, that may help with the cost.  Good luck to you and kitty!!
