Real estate agents and almost all the property investment TV shows say the same thing - if you are decorating your house with the aim to put it on the market, you should use neutral colours.

The idea of neutral colours is somewhat open to interpretation. Generally, though, neutral colours are those that are not extreme. They are meant to appeal to the most people. Turquoise, dark purple and hot pink are not neutral colours. These colours may be liked by many people but are not generally in keeping with mainstream taste.

Neutral colours are often close to white. Cream, off-white and biege are neutral colours. Because these shades are almost devoid of colour, they don't clash with other colours or make a loud statement. They are soothing. Another benefit of these kinds of colours is that they give the effect of a 'blank canvas.' It is easy for a prospective buyer to see how he or she can decorate the home to his or her tastes.
