There are many advantages and disadvantages of freelancing. Freelancers have the freedom to choose their own work and projects, unlike in regular employment. Freelancers can build up portfolios and gain experience. They can obtain clients in the hopes of gaining a permanent position. Freelancers are charge of their own workload, hours and holidays.

A major drawback of freelancing is the uncertainty of work and income. Freelancers also miss out on company benefits, such as retirement pay and health insurance. Freelancers must handle contracts, accounting, legal issues and marketing. It can also be very distracting working at home, especially if you have children.

One difficulty is getting yourself known. This can be done by getting your name in all your local phone books, creating a website, business cards and sending out enquires asking if anyone requires any freelancers.

It may be a good idea to get yourself a little job whilst you are trying to set yourself up as a freelancer, as this will at least provide a little income.

Also, if you are working as a freelancer, then you need to make sure you build a social life, as freelancing can make you feel isolated.

Freelancing is ideal for anyone who enjoys working for themselves.

One of the difficulties of this kind of work is getting known. It's a good idea to assess what you can offer in the way of skills and ask whether or not they are skills which people need.
There are websites offering advice and jobs for freelance workers. If you want to become a freelance writer it's helpful to have a good knowledge of at least one subject that you can write about on a regular basis.
Freelance work doesn't come with a regular income and nothing is guarrenteed in this type of work so be prepared for gaps in the working week and don't always depend on the income from freelance work.
It can be lonely, but on the other hand youwon't have to contend with collegues who you don't get on with. There are alot of openings, dependent on your own skills and the market so it's a good idea to have a CV and examples of your work and job experience to present to prospective employers.
