What Is Self-publishing?

Self-publishing is just what it says ~ you publish your book or CD yourself. Instead of using a mainstream publisher who will do it all for you, you take matters into your own hands and do all the publishing on your own.

Many writers self-publish for many reasons, including the difficulties there are today in securing a publisher or literary agent; they might have a book about a specialist subject that a mainstream publisher won't take on because it is too specialist, or because they don't want to share the profits of their book with a company.

Self-publishing is very rewarding but it also takes a lot of hard work. When you self-publish it is up to you to proof-read your work, design your cover, format your book, put in the copyright, find a good printer to print it and finally market and sell it to book stores and the general public.

This is all doable and there have been some cases highlighted recently of authors who have self-published and secured six figure deals from mainstream publishers.
