How Old An Art Is Stained Glass Window Making?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The art of stained glass window making goes back to early Roman times and the discovery of glass making itself. The technology and the end result, the stained glass window, have been around for well over a thousand years.

What is remarkable about stained glass window making is the way the technology and materials have changed so little over the centuries. If we could transport early Roman stained glass workers in a time machine to a modern day studio they could quite happily produce a window with the tools they found there. Though, presumably, this would only occur after they had recovered from the initial shock of being kidnapped through time and space.

Still made by hand, stained glass windows are always in fashion no matter the decade or location. What else - if anything - could possibly match this spanning of the centuries?

The fact that stained glass still survives today virtually unchanged by time is not a curious anomaly. The reason we still delight in stained glass is that it touches something deep within us all.
