A Yurt is a circular tent of Mongolian origin, constructed of felt or skins on a collapsible wooden framework. A Yurt is more properly called a Ger in Mongolia. Yurt is a generic Russian word, meaning shack 'shack' or 'shanty'. However, due to the influence of Russia in the region, Yurt has become the internationally accepted term.
The yurt consists of wooden expanding lattice wall panels, usually made from beech with rawhide ties and either camel or horsehair ropes. The roof is made up of painted or carved roof poles connecting to a central crown wheel with open segments so you can see the stars. Finally a traditionally painted or carved inner and outer door complete the framework.
The Mongolian yurts have several layers of cover over the framework. The outer cover is a cotton cover. This cover protects the canvas from the sun, and is tied on with horse hair ropes. The next layer is the waterproof canvas cover and below that a layer of sheep's wool felt insulation. Next is another cotton cover to provide a backdrop to the roof poles. Finally, inside is a decorative liner for the walls. In addition to these layers there is an ulk, the cover for the crown which can be adjusted dependent on the weather.
