The North did...uh duh. Sorry just kidding. What happened was similar to the Revolutionary War (in America) Except Grant and Sherman created a tactic called total war which crushes the emotions of the South, in this case. The troops marched up from the South in a 'U' shape. They ended in Richmond, the capital of The South/Confederacy. The Northern soldiers surrounded the capital and Robert E Lee, the Commandeer of the Confederacy was forced to surrender.
