In several countries in Europe, there has already been a ban on smoking in public places, including restaurants and bars for some time now, but the ban will become law in the UK in July 2007.
The move is quite controversial as many people think of a pub as a place to drink and smoke but the law is likely to be strictly enforced. Places in Europe experienced a similar amount of opposition but now the ban is in place, it does make restaurants and bars a much pleasanter environment. Those who want to smoke have to step outside for a while.
Of course, the ruling will never be popular with smokers but, apart from the comfort of non-smokers the ruling has an important underlying reason. Passive smoking causes a lot of lung problems and costs the National Health Service a great deal of money. Cutting passive smoking will help improve health and cut health bills.
