Apart from sikhs wearing turbans to keep their hair healthy  and clean, they also  wear it as a king would wear it as a crown. It is to be worn with pride and respect. At the time Guru Gobind Singh also said a sikh wearing the turban would be recognized amongst a 100.000 people with haircuts. Today many immatation and cult religions copy the look of the sikh.

The reason why Sikhs wear turbans is to preserve their long hair.  Sikhs have a rare tradition of not cutting their hair and growing it as long as it could grow.  The turbans that they wear keeps the impurities of dust and dirt away from their hair, ensuring the health of the hair.  Another purpose of wearing turbans is to keep the long mane of hair out of the way so that they could perform their everyday functions comfortably and conveniently.  Basically the religion of Sikhism is a mixture of the two religions Hinduism and Islam, which initiated in the year 1699 at the beginning of the Hindu New Year by Guru (teacher) Gobind Rai who, along with his followers assembled in the foothills of the Himalayas to behold the outset of this new faith.  In the later years, 80000 people were initiated into the Sikh fraternity, the faith becoming popular all over India.
