Chocolate syrup is very easy to make. All you need to hit the shops for is cocoa powder and vanilla because all the other things you would already have at home.
You would need a cup of cocoa powder, a cup and a half of sugar, a pinch of salt, some vanilla and a cup and a half of water. You can always increase or decrease the quantities according to how much syrup you want to make. But make sure that the ratio stays the same between cocoa, sugar and water (2:3:3). You can also use vanilla essence instead of vanilla but do not add too much otherwise its smell becomes too overpowering. A drop or a maximum of two drops should be more than enough.
Once you have all the ingredients in place, find a saucepan and add cocoa and water to it. Whisk the mixture together so that the cocoa dissolves in water. It is best to use a whisk for this as spoons or forks may not dissolve the cocoa well which would leave lumps in your syrup. Now put the saucepan on a low flame. When the cocoa dissolves, add sugar and salt. Stir until they dissolve. Increase the heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it boils, lower the heat and let simmer for 3-4 minutes.
Now, get a clean jar or bottle (preferably sterilized* to prevent spoiling) and pour the sauce into it. Store it in the refrigerator.
*You can sterilize a glass bottle or jar by boiling it in water for 2-3 minutes. Do not do this to plastic bottle or jars.
Bon appetit!
