There are 24 hours in one day. The earth is moving on its axis. This movement is called "Rotation". The earth rotates a total of 360 degrees in 24 hours. If we divide 360 by 24, we find out numbers of degrees the earth rotates each hour.
The earth rotates 15 degrees each hour. The lines of longitudes or meridians are used to calculate time all over the world. When it is noon in one country, it can be morning in somewhere elsewhere. This time difference is because earth rotates on its axis from west to east. The direction of rotation makes the sun appear to rise in the east and travel west. So the sun rises first in countries east of the 0 degree longitude.
To calculate time the earth has been divided into 24 zones. There are 15 degrees of longitudes in each zone, that is, 15 lines of longitude makes up 1 zone. These zones are called Time Zones. In each time zone all areas have the same local time. The 180 degree longitude has been established as the "International Date Line". While traveling if we cross west of this line, we subtract one day and if we cross east of the line, then we add one day.
