What Is Iodine Or Its Compounds Used For?

    Iodine and its compounds are applied in many fields like: antiseptics, food supplements and medicine. Other than these it is also used in dyes, as catalysts and in photography. External wounds are treated with a solution of KI (potassium iodide) and iodine or tincture iodine. Lugol's iodine is used as antiseptic. In photography, silver iodide a compound of iodine is used for the development of photographic plates along with solutions of other compounds. Iodine prevents goiter and hence it is used in common salts.

    The radioisotope Iodine-123 and Iodine-125 are applied in medicinal field for tracing images and functioning of thyroid gland. Even the radioisotope, Iodine-131 is applied as a cure for thyroid cancer and also for treating Grave's disease.  Potassium iodide is used for treating people affected by nuclear disaster and who have taken in –directly or indirectly- radioactive iodine-131.
