What Should I Not Do If My Car Breaks Down On The Motorway?

Answer Question

Do not stop anywhere else other than the hard shoulder as you will almost certainly cause a pile up.

Do not attempt repairs on the offside of your vehicle, the side nearest the traffic, even if it is just a flat tyre. It is simply just too dangerous, you run the risk of being struck by oncoming traffic or causing vehicles travelling in the inside land to swerve.

Under no circumstances, cross the carriageway to retrieve anything or call for help. Use the police emergency phones which are indicated by marker poles bounding the hard shoulder. The emergency phones are located every half mile. If there is debris or personal property on the carriageway the traffic police will be able to retrieve it safely.

Do not use the hard shoulder for anything except an emergency.

Never wait in your vehicle for help to arrive, even if it is raining heavy.
