The term gunwale, marked as "gunnel" to go with "tunnel", basically is a nautical expression illustrating the peak rim of the side of a boat. In the beginning the gunwale was the "Gun ridge" on a marine warship.

This represented the intensification wale or the structural band added to the plan of the ship, at and on top of the level of a gun deck. It was initially fashioned to contain the stresses forced by the use of artillery. In wooden boats, the gunwale continued to be accumulated inboard of the complete strake, not considering the use of gunnery.
In contemporary boats, it is the peak edge of the side where there is often some type of stiffening. In a canoe, the gunwale is normally the extended edge at the peak of the side of a boat.
