Cork has been settled by a range of different people throughout history – the Vikings, the Welsh, the English, the Huguenots, the Scots and others.

The name Cork is derived from the Irish phrase that means the great marsh of Munster. It refers to the fact that the centre of Cork City is built on islands, surrounded by the River Lee, which were marshy and prone to flooding.

There was early prehistoric settlement in the area and there are plenty of archeological sites still being investigated. In pre-Christian times, the Celts settled here and farmed the lush river valleys. Their Gaelic language is still spoken in Cork today.

Since the 7th century AD, Cork has been a city and a centre of learning and a trading centre and a thriving port. Devastation came to the city with the potato famine in the 1840s but Cork has recovered from this and the economic decline in the 1930s – 1950s. Today, it is a thriving cosmopolitan Irish city.
