Water is extremely important to life because it is an essential constituent of the protoplasm of the cells. Approximately 70% of the body weight is water. In most conditions, a person can survive longer without food than water. Water is so important to like because it has the ability to dissolve many of both inorganic salts and organic compounds. Thus water servers as a medium in which various chemical reactions of the body occur.
Water acts as a transporting agent for digested food substances from the intestines to other parts of the body. It takes the excretory products from the cells to the excretory organs for removal. It carries hormones from their place of origin to the organs where they are required. The different digestive juices (like saliva and gastric juice etc), blood and the lubricant found in the joints have water can the main constituent. In addition to this water is needed during the process of digestion. It also helps to regulate the temperature of the body by removing excess heat by the evaporation of sweat from the skin surface.
Water is lost from the body daily during breathing, in the urine and through sweating. The amount of water need by a person depends on the amount of physical activity and the environmental conditions.
