Europe largest, man-made prehistoric monument is Silbury Hill, located in Wiltshire, in the southwestern UK. The 34m high man-made hill is believed to be over 5000 years old and was created by people during the New Stone Age. Romans inhabited the area about 3000 years after the mound's construction.

When viewed from above, Silbury Hill looks like a dome-shaped mound and is almost perfectly round. The hill's total territory stands at about 5 acres. It remains unclear as to precisely what purpose the hill served, as few artefacts have been found in the area which would have provided some clues. Most archaeologists do not believe that it served as a burial ground.

Archaeologists recently discovered the remains of what may have been a Roman village in the vicinity of the hill and near the Winterbourne River. Due to the relative proximity of Bath, this settlement may have served as a stop-over point for Romans travelling to, or from Bath.
