In 1983, he left the Microsoft Company because he was suffering from Hodgkin's disease. However, he is still working as an active member on the board of directors for the Microsoft Corporation.
He is also considered to be one of the richest men in the world. He continues to hold a lot of stock in the Microsoft Corporation.
On his own, since he has left Microsoft, he has made a name for himself as a founder of hi-tech firms such as Starwave, America Online and Ticketmaster. He is also the enthusiastic owner of the NBA's Portland Trailblazers and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.
