Where Would You Find A Tittle?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

You would find a tittle on top of 'i' (the letter). It is the dot you mark over an i. A title refers to a small distinguishing mark. Even a diacritic would be a tittle.

The tittle initially appeared in Latin manuscripts back in the 11th century. It was observed to discern the letter i as separate from strokes of nearby letters. Originally it was written as a larger mark; however it was condensed to just a dot following the introduction of Roman-style typefaces.

A diacritic (also known as an accent mark or a diacritical mark or) denotes a small sign which we add to a particular letter so as to vary pronunciation or even to make a distinction between some similar words. For instance, ' ´ ', that slant (as in the letter é) would be an acute accent.
