A database is a collection, an organised collection of information and used in electronic form , it is an example of an electronic filing cabinet.

The advantages of using database are that information can be quickly recalled or updated. They are a good resource for searching and sorting information very quickly and very accurately.
A data base consists of records and information on any subject which is collected together and each element is called a field, for example; names, addresses, ages, occupations.
Each set of fields make one record. The records are stored in the fields; for example Surname, First Name, Age, Occupation, Address.
The type of data being used - think about this carefully as you may use both text and numerial data. Numerical data and currency fields can be used. If text and numbers are used these are called alphanumerical fields.
databases can be searched, sorted and re-arranged in both Excell and Access.
