Was Cosmetic Surgery Socially Accepted In The Early Years?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

At the time cosmetic surgery first made its appearance, it was a very expensive procedure. When surgeons started using it commercially, the price tags that came with the different procedures available in those times ensured that it stayed outside the reach of the masses. There was also massive social bias, influenced partly by religion, which saw it being looked down by the common people.

The Christian notion at that time of the human body being a design of God had a lot to do with social bias, as cosmetic surgery was made to seem like an open derision of God's will. The fact that surgeons were trying to alter God-given attributes was something not many people from those times could digest.

Owing to these reasons, initially cosmetic surgery was like a stepchild. However, over time the attitudes have changed, to an extent where disfigurement is not at all the key reason for cosmetic surgery, it could be even something as personal as dissatisfaction with the way one looks. That has been a long journey over quite a period of time, and today cosmetic surgery has finally found the acceptance it deserves in society.
