Forex trading, a shortened version of foreign exchange trading, involves the buying and selling of currency as opposed to commodities or stocks and shares.
Profits are made in forex trading not by the value of the currency as such, but in the relative exchange values between two currencies. That's why forex trading values are always currency pairs, for example, US dollars and Japanese Yen. Deals on the forex market entail simultaneously buying and selling pairs of currencies in the hope of cashing in on favourable exchange rate fluctuations.
This can lead to substantial rewards but also high risks for exchange rates can often see-saw significantly. The trick is to guess correctly the direction of the fluctuation between two currencies.
Compared to other markets, the forex trader needs to keep a close eye on the ball as changes in trading conditions are rapid and influenced by a multitude of factors including world events, oil prices, interest rates and the global economic climate. It is, then, not a place for the faint-hearted or the novice.
