Another form of embryo experimentation is embryonic stem cell research. Young embryos have several special cells which have not yet developed into heart, brain or nerve cells. They are the human cells that have the potential to develop into any cells of the human body. Proponents of this process argue that embryos extracted from human embryos have much more potential in helping to make medical advances (such as cures for diseases and treatment for medical conditions) than forms of adult stem cell research.

Stem cells can be used to repair or replace damaged organs. This process involves the growing of a few hundred embryos before the extraction of stem cells that seem to have the same genetic features as the patient who requires them. However, the remaining embryos which are not required are destroyed. Proponents of studies on stem cells could also teach scientists more about embryology and the study of development.
