How Do I Set Up A Wireless Home Network?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

To set-up a wireless network you first need the basic necessary equipment which is Broadband Internet Connection, a wireless router and a computer which has built-in wireless networking support or a wireless network adapter.

First of all find your cable or DSL modem and unplug it to disconnect the net. Your next step is to connect the wireless router to the modem. Make sure that your modem stays connected directly to the internet. After hooking everything up, your computer on its own will wirelessly connect to the router, and the router will start sending communications though the modem to the internet. After this your next step will be to connect your router to the modem.

Now unplug the network cable from the back of you computer and connect it to port which says Internet, WAN or WLAN on the back of your router. Now plug in and start the cable or DSL modem. You will have to wait a few minutes for it to connect to the internet, then plug in and switch on your wireless router. After a minute or two the Internet, WAN or WLAN light on the wireless router will come on which will indicate that it has successfully connected to your modem.

Now use the network cables that came with the wireless router, you should connect your computer for the time being to any of the open network ports on the wireless router. Now open the Internet explorer and put in the address to configure your router.

If your computer does not comprise of built in wireless system, connect your network cable in the USB port, now place the Antenna above your computer. Now windows XP will automatically perceive the new adapter and you will be asked for the CD which came with the adapter. Once the CD is loaded the on screen instructions will help you through the configuration process.

Found a product since this question was posted. If you have DSL or cable, you can buy a box that has the modem and router all in one machine. Less wires, less headache. Many retailers are unaware of the products, but I was able to find it at Best Buy.
