Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Torquay United Football Club was founded in 1899. The original team won the Torquay and District League title in 1909 and in the following year, they joined forces with another local side, named Ellacombe. This team was known as Torquay Town.

The club played it's games at the ground of Plainmoor, which it shared with local rivals, Babbacombe. Eventually Babbacombe agreed to a merger with Torquay Town and the new club turned professional in 1921, operating under the original name of Torquay United.

The club was accepted into the Football League in 1927 after winning the Southern League.

Torquay United still plays it's home games at Plainmoor which has a current capacity for approximately 6,000 spectators. One of their most famous fans is Helen Chamberlain who is the co-presenter of Soccer AM on Sky Sports One.

The club currently plays in the League Two division of the Football League. In the 2005/06 season they finished in 20th place in the table.
