Look them straight in the eye, smile at them and be very nice. That will sometimes make them feel guilty for being so rude.
Remember that you can't please all the people all the time. Some are just plain old sour puss's and you can't please them no matter what you do, but as long as you are nice, then the wrong is on them, not you. And never let them see you sweat. Some people enjoy upsetting others. Don't give them the satisfaction of bothering you.
