Even in some severe outbreaks, a flock may continue a reasonably high rate of production. However, in broilers, feed adaptation is reduced. In gentle outbreaks, a few reductions in egg production are the main loss.

The virus causing contagious laryngotracheitis may be in the air or passed on apparatus or clothing; expand is mainly by direct bird get in touch with. The virus may be picked up by inhaling droplets following the cough of an infected bird or by drinking contaminated water. Birds which have recovered from a natural outbreak of the disease are carriers of the infection. The natural route of infection is through the respiratory tract. It frequently occurs from year to year on the same premises or in the same genera area.

Infectious laryngotracheitis spreads slowly through a flock, taking a week or two to affect most of the birds. This contrasts markedly with an explosive outbreak of infectious bronchitis, when ail birds in a flock may be affected in a matter of hours. Thus, an early diagnosis of laryngotracheitis would permit a flock owner to vaccinate pens of birds which have not been affected by the disease.
