What Nation Post Was Held By Albert Sidney Johnston, Who Was Killed At Shiloh?

Albert Sidney Johnston was the second highest ranking Confederate General and Commander of the Western Department. He was appointed by Jefferson Davis on May 30, 1861.

He lead the Conderate Forces in surprise attack on Grant at Shiloh on Aopril 6, 1862 and was wounded by bullet striking his right knee. Not realizing he was seriously wounded he refused the attention of his personal physician sending him to care for wounded Union soldiers.

His leg was numb from an earlier injury, thus he did not feel pain from his present wound. He soon realized he was bleeding profusely into his boot, because an artery had been sliced by the bullet. Some of his men realized he was in danger and took him to a ravine nearby where he bled to death in a short time.

A monument marks General Jonhston's grave in the Texas State Cemetary in Austin,Texas.
