Idol is a noun that refers to an image that is used when worshiping or as an object to worship. It can also mean a false God. An idol is used to refer to an individual who is excessively adored or blindly. It refers to something that is without substance but yet visible.

The word "idol" comes from the Middle English and was derived from the Old French "idole". The roots of the word are however from the Latin "idolum" which was in turn taken from the Greek "eidolon" meaning phantom or idol.

Idol worship is closely related to polytheism. Amongst the monotheist faiths two of three scripture religions namely Judaism and Islam strictly forbid depicting God in any image or form, however the Christian faith allows the crafting of statues and paintings of religious motives.
