The book The Burning Shore was the first book in the second sequence of books within the series relating to the Courtney Family written by Wilbur Smith. This book concerns the life of the illegitimate son of the protagonist in the first series. The story begins with this son Michael and his role of a fighter pilot in World War One. While serving he meets gets involves with a French Woman. She gets pregnant and they decide to marry.
Unfortunately on the day of the wedding he dies in a dog fight with a German Ace who sets an ambush for him. The Frenchwoman, Catherine de Thiry is sent by Michael's biological father who Michael only knew as Uncle Sean to his brother in South Africa. On the way her vessel is torpedoed by the Germans and she lands up lost in the African wilderness sustained by a pair of San natives.
