As evident from its name, self-disclosure refers to the communication in which one divulges information about oneself. Being a type of communication, self-disclosure contains all those elements that all other kinds of communication have. Like over-statements, slip of the tongue which is an instinctive phenomenon. Sometimes non-verbal signals also constitute part of self-disclosure that normally happens on an unconscious basis.

Self-disclosure is mostly information about the self. In other instances, it is information that pertains to other factors that are relevant to the person. It is normally that kind of information that is kept hidden by the individual as it is part of his/ her private world. The practice of self-disclosure actually discloses that information and empowers others around that individual to access that private world signalling the beginning of a bond.
Self-disclosure is extremely important in the development of a person's personality as it concerns the person himself- this thoughts, his feelings and behaviours. And the way other people react to the divulgences goes a long way in shaping up the demeanour and thoughts of the person, who was actually engaged in self-disclosure.
