My Classic Saab 900 Is Sometimes Difficult To Start When The Engine Is Warm.

Like so many things involving cars, there could be a number of reasons for this occurring. However, past experience suggests that, more often than not, the solution is a small fix rather than a big job; the proverbial wee bit of dirt rather than 'Your big end's gone, mate!' -type of diagnosis.

In this spirit, the prime suspect is the breather pipe on the crank case, the hose that crosses over the top of the engine, drawing in air. Take a good look at this hose and examine carefully for any cracks or splits, especially at each end where it connects to the engine.

Often, this hose is shielded by a thicker hose to protect it from heat. If there are no obvious wear and tear on the visible portion of the breather hose, remove it from the sleeve and check for holes along the entire length.

Replace the breather pipe if it appears damaged. A few turns of insulation tape will effect a temporary repair.
