Welshman Ray Reardon won the 1973 World Snooker Championship and when world rankings were developed in 1976 Reardon was clearly placed at the top. He first won the title in 1970, held it from 1973 to 1976 and reclaimed it in 1978. He dominated the world snooker scene throughout the 1970s. He lost his ranking in 1980 only to reclaim it in 1982 at the age of 50. He remains the oldest ever player to achieve a win in a ranking tournament. Reardon personal style drew much amused comment. His slicked back dark hair with prominent widow's peak earned him the nickname 'Dracula'. Reardon only turned professional in 1967. His first job was as a miner at the age of only 14. he survived a serious mining accident in which he was buried by a roof fall and went on to become a police officer before turning to snooker full-time.
