What Was A 'horseless Buggy'?
Answers
The inventing of the automobile was a long slow process of growth. The first land vehicle that was self propelled with an engine was made in 1769 by Nicholas Cugnot. It was an unwieldy three-wheeled cart with a steam engine and an enormous boiler. In 1789, Oliver Evans received the first United States patent for his four wheeled self-propelled wagon which had a paddle wheel at the rear so it could be operated in both land and water. For the next 80 years the experiment was continued with powered carriages on the road. Most of them were steam or electricity driven and had to carry large batteries. In 1880, two important inventions took place. One was the development of the internal combustion engine and the other was pneumatic or air filled tire.
The first petrol powered car was put on the road by Gottlieb Daimler in 1887. After five or six years in the United States two brothers named Frank and Charles Duryea, built the first successful American Petrol Automobiles. The name of their machine was "a horseless buggy".
