What Can You Tell Me About Student Car Insurance?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A number of companies specialise in offering student car insurance deals and invariably their adverts will be found in student newspapers etc. and online too.

Usually, the student car insurance policies are no more expensive than others aimed at young drivers. Often, in fact, they are slightly cheaper as a result of having negotiated a special deal with a student organisations.

However, it has to be asked do you really need a car? Student accommodation usually tends to be within a reasonable distance from campus. When cash is tight it will normally be cheaper to use public transport than meet the running costs of a car. Unless you're planning to return home every weekend, a car would probably spend most of the week sitting idle.

Another consideration is overnight parking. Is there a secure garage nearby you can use? If not, on-street parking will hike up premiums.

If a car is essential, the cheapest to insure is normally something small, cheap, low spec and low powered. Insurance Group 1 to 4 are usually inexpensive to insure so long as there is nothing else to throw a spanner in the works.
