DES stands for Data Encryption Standard. It is a method for encrypting information that is sensitive and unclassified. This algorithm was first selected in 1976 by NBS as an official Federal Information processing standard for America and is now used world wide.

DES Algorithm performs two operations on its input. These are bit shifting and bit substitution. If these operations are done repeatedly, the results can not be used for retrieving original without the key as key controls the overall process.

DES algorithm is now taken as insecure by several applications. It is because the 56 bit key size is too small. There are theoretical weaknesses in the cipher. It has been superseded by Advanced Encryption Standard.
