Opinion is known as a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty. The debate is an argument with the other person by presenting the facts and figures. You can't give your ideas in a debate otherwise, it would only be an opinion not a fact.
You can though say that they are inter-related but there is lot of difference between two.
Zuhail gave you a pretty good idea of the differences between a debate and an opinion poll.
An opinion poll is just as it sounds. It asks what people think of something. "Coke vs Pepsi" has popped as a debate a couple of times. Wanting to know which beverage people prefer is merely asking for their opinions.
A debate, on the other hand, is a statement (not a question or one's opinion) that can be argued for or against. I could write a statement such as "Ethanol is the answer to America's energy problem." I didn't ask as a question, and I didn't say it was my opinion. I have presented a point that has a positive and a negative side. A debater should be able to choose either position (in spite of what he personally thinks) and persuade others that his side is the one that is better. He should be using verifiable facts and giving objective information. I could argue that ethanol is the answer because cars get better mileage (give some stats). On the other side I could say it isn't the answer because it cost too much to make (also including stats)
I know that Blurtit debates are not as formal as what I described, but writing "I agree/disagree" is not a response to a debate. Why do I agree or disagree? I should be telling others why the side I have chosen to defend is better than the other side. I should try to convince you that it is better.
Opinion poll basically asks opinions/suggestions of others about a specific topic.
In debate you are just telling others your ideas about specific topic not asking them.
I'm sorry, but our idea of a debate is not correct. As a matter of fact, it's the same as what you said an opinion poll is. You just used different words. A debate is about facts, not about one's own ideas. A debater should be able to defend a topic without agreeing with it. That's where the facts come in.
