A lectern is a kind of a tall slanting table used for holding books or papers so that the person or a speaker can read from it. It is more commonly seen in auditoriums when a person is giving out a speech. It is also called as a podium. It is usually installed with a small light, a microphone and a stool in case the speaker cannot reach it. Lecterns are easily available where furniture is sold or you can also make it at home. Small lecterns are also available in case you want to make a speech while sitting down. It is more commonly seen at churches, when the priest reads out passages from the holy books.
