They were in the same place as now (though smaller of course) but Istanbul was called Byzantium (it was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC.) You can find both cities on this map (it's very small, but you can scroll down to the list of names below, get the number/letter references for Athens and Byzantium and find them on the map that way.)
