How Did The U.s. Get Permission To Begin Building The Panama Canal?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Panama was part of Columbia. When Columbia didn't readily sign a treaty with the U.S., the U.S. Encouraged a rebellion of wealthy Panamanian land-owners and sent the U.S. Navy to back them up. Those whom the U.S. Aided in taking over control of the area of Panama from Columbia, of course granted generous terms to build and operate the canal.
