I doubt the veracity of your statement that consumerism initiated during the cold war. If anything the mass manufacturing industrial units were converted to manufacturing arms. In fact, consumerism started with the emergence of the bourgeois class after the industrial revolution. When scholars were oriented to seek knowledge for the sake of material gain as opposed to higher human ordeals and values. My position on this issue however is that consumerism is not a social ill that should be eradicated for the benefit of mankind. Reality is that ever since there have been humans on this planet they have had needs and sought iteratively for the gratification of needs. With the shift from agrarian to technology oriented civilization it was only logical that people would endeavor for greater opportunities for self-fulfillment.
