One may categorize small scale industry in India in either of the two :-
1) Traditional small scale industry. ( man power intensive)
2) Modern small scale industry. ( Capital Intensive)
In terms of their GDP contribution the most important small scale industries are
Hand loom, coir and village industries as far as traditional industries are concerned and major contributors in terms of modernized facilities include garments and leather industries. It is important to note that small scale industries contribute to nearly a staggering 35% in the Gross Domestic Product and 40 % in total exports. These industries are also important because of India's status as an extensive agricultural country a large contribution in terms of raw material is consumed in these sectors alone.
