What Does Master Craftsman Mean?

A master craftsman was a craftsman of the highest order who was a member of a guild. Master craftsman were also known as Grandmaster or simply Master. In the European guild system to become a member of the guild the individual should attain the rank of a master craftsman. Master Craftsman was the only order of craftsman who was given the permission to join the guild.

An individual aspiring to become a master craftsman would have to start his career as an apprentice and then move on to the next level of a journeyman. After he has cleared all these levels he can aim to become a master craftsman. However before actually joining the guild, the master craftsman needs to produce some money and a masterpiece in front of the guild.
